UN announces landmark ocean conservation deal

Marine species such as turtles, sharks and whales will have time to recover, after countries reached a historic agreement on March 5, 2023.

The UN has just announced the first international agreement for the conservation of the oceans (High Seas Treaty).

After ten years of negotiations, the nations reached an agreement to protect the oceans from climate change, overfishing, mining and trafficking by means of large vessels. Currently only 1% of the oceans are protected and marine life outside these boundaries was at risk.
