The ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) issued in April the document “Practical Considerations for HYBRID ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEMS Onboard Vessels” presenting the certification body’s point of view on the technologies being considered for the fulfillment of the ambitious objectives established by the IMO (International Maritime Organization) for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime navigation sector.
The publication (see link) addresses the topic from the perspective of propulsion architecture, use of energy from renewable sources, energy storage, integration of batteries with power management systems, application of computer simulation models and impact on port infrastructure, as well as regulatory issues.
